Pittsburg Unified School District School Counseling Program

Pittsburg Unified School District School Counseling Program

Mission Statement
It is the mission of the Pittsburg Unified School District School Counseling Program to follow and implement the ASCA (American School Counselor Association) National Model and collaborate with school and community organizations. Our emphasis is on scholar needs and interests to foster growth through Academic, College and Career, and Social/Emotional Development.  By harnessing the rich diversity of our community, we strive to graduate culturally sensitive lifelong learners who contribute positively to society through safe, respectful, and responsible action.

Program Philosophy
The Comprehensive School Counseling Program of the Pittsburg Unified School District is an essential and integral part of the district's educational program.  School counseling is instrumental for our scholars to become successful lifelong learners who have developed relevant individualized educational plans that propel them toward their future goals and careers.

We commit to develop, support, and guide the whole child in a developmentally appropriate manner:  academic, career, and social/emotional.  As a result, school counselors work closely with teachers, administrators, parents, and community members to provide resources, skills, knowledge, and a positive attitude toward work and learning.

The Pittsburg School Counseling Program must be a uniform program maintained by district-wide collaboration that transitions between school sites and begins at the elementary schools and flows seamlessly from one level to the next. It includes school counselor core curriculum, individual scholar planning, responsive services, and system support. The Pittsburg Unified School District believes that a comprehensive school counseling program is an essential component of the educational experience of all scholars.

Academic Beliefs - We believe:
  • In ensuring that all scholars develop individual academic plans.
  • All scholars deserve to receive school counseling services (core curriculum and intervention services) which are an integral part of all scholars’ education by providing knowledge, skills and resources for scholars.
  • Seamless transitions between educational levels are essential.
  • That our comprehensive school counseling program should be aligned with the best practices of the American School Counselor Association national standards including ethics, confidentiality, and data driven program development.

Career Beliefs - We believe:
  • All scholars deserve to understand the connection between their education and future careers.
  • School counselors will provide resources for scholars to develop an awareness of personal abilities, skills, interests, and motivation.
  • School Counselors are an essential component in ensuring scholars establish and pursue career goals.

Social/Emotional Beliefs - We believe:
  • School counselors will provide resources the scholars need to acquire the knowledge, attitudes, and interpersonal skills necessary to understand themselves and respect others.
  • School Counselors facilitate self-discovery and identification of scholars’ personal strengths.

School Counselors provide support for scholars to build emotional resiliency in order to succeed academically and in future careers.
